Why Relational Sustainability is Just as Important as Ecological Sustainability

Dear friend,

You know all about ecological sustainability.

But relational sustainability is just as important.

By relational, I mean interpersonal and social. Yes, I’m talking about sustainable relationships.

As a spouse, I want to sustain a long-term, meaningful relationship with my partner.

As a friend, I want to support my friends and to receive support from them.

As a parent, I want to model empathy, kindness, and connection for my children. I want to cultivate in them secure attachments — an approach summarized as attachment parenting.

The theory is: If your child can connect to you, then they are better prepared to connect to others.

And guess what? Connecting to others turns out to be an incredibly valuable skill — perhaps the most valuable skill.

Children who can connect to others experience more fulfilling relationships of all types. They grow into adults that are happier, more empathetic, and more successful, by many measures.

The main benefit of secure attachment is that when things inevitably go wrong, you’re able to navigate it, interpersonally — without losing that connection, and without losing the entire relationship.

Relational sustainability sustains us.

As a business owner, I want the same sort of relational longevity for my company. I want to build long-lasting, meaningful relationships with suppliers, vendors, and — of course, but at the risk of sounding hokey — you.

How do you sustain the relationships in your life?

And if this resonates, will you share this post with a friend?

Sleep well,
Nora
